Google has suspended President Donald Trump’s account on YouTube, the world’s largest video platform.
The Google-owned company said on Tuesday night that Trump uploaded content that violated its policies and automatically went on strike, which resulted in a minimum of 7 days to upload new content. It said it is also disabling the comment section.
Donald J. Trump (Donald J. Before being permanently banned, the company enacted three strike rules. The temporary suspension means that Trump’s account and existing videos will still be accessible, but he will not be able to upload New content.
The company said in a social media statement on Wednesday evening: “After review and taking into account concerns about the continued violence, we deleted new content uploaded to the Donald J. Trump channel to Violation of our policy.”
The company did not specify which video violated its policies.
Under YouTube’s three-strike system, the channel will be suspended for one week after the first strike, two weeks after the second strike, and terminated within 90 days after the third strike.
After Trump’s violence in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, YouTube suspended Trump’s account, resulting in five deaths. Politicians and the public are calling for social media and technology companies to manage their platforms more closely, which may incite further violence.
Both Twitter and Facebook announced that they will permanently suspend Trump’s account on their respective platforms (Twitter). However, Trump found a solution and started tweeting from the government-owned @POTUS account later on Friday, and then eventually deleted it.
Google-owned YouTube announced on Thursday that it will suspend any new channels that first falsely publish videos of widespread voter fraud allegations, rather than warning them first. Late Thursday, Alphabet employees called on YouTube executives to take further action against the president, criticizing them for not suspending their accounts, and believing that he would incite further misinformation and violence.
Google also removed the social media application Parler from the Google Play store on Friday, which is popular with Trump supporters, making it more difficult for Android users to download and access the application.
YouTube can be distinguished from other social networks because the video can be shared on other platforms, so it has a wide coverage.
