“World of Warcraft” adds a new mount to the new “Chain of Domination” update version launched by the “Shadow Land” expansion. It is a huge ancient tree that you can ride and step on. At last. This is probably the most anticipated part of the update (I’m just kidding).
At BlizzConline, I talked to Jeremy Feasel, the main game designer of World of Warcraft, about this mount, including how it was produced, why it is so unique and how to connect with broader knowledge.
Blizzard recently launched a player survey, asking fans what they would like to see from the new mount, and allowing them to vote on what it will look like. The idea is to work closely with the community in a new way to help players better understand the connection with Azeroth and World of Warcraft. Some of the other options in the survey include giant books you can ride, kittens made of jelly, caterpillars and creepy spiders.
Wandering ancient times is the most popular choice so far, Feasel said. He said: “Everywhere there are people who ride on big trees and win a big victory.”
Fans of The Lord of the Rings are likely to be familiar with the big tree that walked with Ents, but the ancients, especially the core part of the legend of Warcraft and the night elves.
Feasel said of the depiction of giant walking trees in the media such as “The Lord of the Rings”: “There is a myth of riding on a tree.” “Moreover, the night elves have a long and extensive knowledge of ancient protectors, and… It goes all the way back to Warcraft 3. I think a faction in the player community has always wanted to ride one of those things and they finally got their wish.”
Feasel said that the Wandering Ancients is one of the largest mounts in World of Warcraft’s history, so players can expect it to feel very unique in this regard. He said: “This is a mount that steps on the landscape.”
The uniqueness of Wandering Ancient is that it changes colors with the seasons-please check the animated GIF above to see how it works. In addition, its special function will shake the trees, and the leaves of different seasons will drop leaves of different colors. Feasel laughed at the wandering ancient mounts and there will be some “unique extra little things”, which will be announced later.
One of these surprises may have been revealed. If you look closely, you will find that one of the mount ideas that did not get enough votes-the caterpillar-actually has a residence on the “Wandering Ancient Mount”. The bug was placed in a place that looked like he was controlling the mount, which was great.
As part of BlizzConline, the studio released an in-depth video of “Ancient Wandering”, in which interdisciplinary developers discussed how they brought the mount into the game from the beginning to the final model. This is an impressive video, it really shows the particularity and uniqueness of the mount. Check out the video below.
In the update of the dominance chain, Wandering Ancient is not the only new mount to enter the Shadow Continent. There will also be a series of new flying supports, which you can see below.
Since its expansion last year, “Chain of Control” is the first major update to “Shadowlands.” It will include a new 10-head raid, an 8-head giant dungeon, will have a “hard” mode, additional PvP content, changes to the flower gum, etc. In terms of the story, players will eventually fight Sylvanas, a battle that has lasted for many years.
We talked to Feasel and technical designer Frank Kowalkowski about a series of other topics about the shadow world, the dominance chain and the wider World of Warcraft. Please check our full interview later on GameSpot.
