Well, it finally happened. Google announced today that its extremely popular Google Photos application will lose free unlimited storage space next year. With a product that has fulfilled this promise, is free storage now a thing of the past and is it still worth using?
Since its debut 5 years ago, Google Photos has provided unlimited storage space for everyone for free. The only gain? The photo is compressed, but in a way that most people can hardly see. This is a victory for everyone!
The promise of free storage is always “forever”, but now it has a validity period. From June 1, 2021, any new video images backed up to “Photos”
Indeed, this is inevitable. Storage space is not free. More than one billion people back up new images and videos every day. Even if each person has only a few megabytes of storage, it is a storage capacity that ordinary people cannot understand.
So now Google Photos will eventually cost something Is it worth using for everyone? For Android users, I think the argument is simple. Google Photos is pre-loaded and works perfectly on the platform. Countless functions such as sharing photo albums, link sharing, automatic backups, clearing storage space and printing storage are things you won’t find on most other services. Amazon provides free unlimited storage space for Prime members, but I think Google Photos has a better overall feature set, although it requires payment, it can still attract many people.
However, the conversation on iOS is very different. There, Google Photos needs to be installed manually, and for many people, an account needs to be registered. Due to the platform’s restrictions on background applications (another day’s conversation), photos can’t work properly on iOS. At the same time, Apple’s iCloud Backup has been locally integrated into the stock photo application and backs up photos from the moment someone gets the phone. It offers much less storage space, but for users who are not so tech-savvy, Google Photos is hard to sell.
After a year of comprehensive decision-making, what will you do? Is Google Photos still worth it? Will you switch to other services? Vote in the poll below!

Personally, I think Google Photos is still worth it. The function of this service is second to none, you have already got 15GB of storage space for free. Also, when you start paying for storage space, it will be shared in Photos, Drive, and Gmail, and you can even share that storage space with the entire family. Buying a product that was once free is definitely a bad thing, but it’s worth using Photos.
