From what looks like the beginning of time, the text editor built into Microsoft Windows had real problems reading and speaking other people's languages, and in particular the new-line characters used by non-Microsoft operating systems.

But after decades of frustration and after downloading a true text editor to change a single line in a configuration file from a Linux box, Microsoft has updated Notepad to handle end-of-line characters in Unix, Linux, and macOS environments to be able to.

"As of the current Windows 1

0 insider build, Notepad supports linefeed (LF), Macintosh end-of-line (CR), and Windows end-of-line (CRLF) as usual. New files created in Notepad use Windows end-of-line (CRLF ) by default, but it is now possible to view, edit, and print existing files, maintaining the file's current end-of-line format correctly, "the company said in a blog post.

Notepad also has a pair of registry keys: to control whether end-of-line characters are changed when text is inserted; and whether Windows end-of-line is forced when the Enter key is pressed, effectively disabling the new behavior.

In recent years, Microsoft has changed its attitude towards Linux and moved away from its famous lineage that Linux is a cancer] The company is now a member of the Linux Foundation, sponsoring the Open Source Initiative and launched its first product last month released with a Linux kernel called Azure Sphere.
