Samsung Isocell Dual Pixel Pro

  • Samsung announced the 50MP Isocell GN2 camera sensor.

Samsung released the 50MP Isocell GN1 last year, which is different from its 108MP sensor. The lower resolution of the GN1 is offset by its larger pixels, which greatly improves the low-light capture performance of the paper.

Now, Samsung has announced the successor to Isocell GN1, called Isocell GN2. This is also a 50MP sensor, but compared to the previous sensor, it has a larger sensor size (1/1.12 inch) and larger pixels (1.4 microns). Of particular note is the pixel size because it is the same size as the IMX363 sensor used in most Google Pixel phones.

When the sun goes down, the larger pixel size will bring better image quality, so we look forward to seeing standard pictures from the new sensor. In any case, Isocell GN2 can also use 4-in-1 pixel binning to provide images roughly equivalent to 12.5MP 2.8-micron pixel cameras.

The improvement is not over yet, because Samsung said Isocell GN2 is its first sensor to provide Dual Pixel Pro technology. This is an upgraded version of phase detection autofocus, you can see that there are two photodiodes in each pixel for faster autofocus. But because the pixels can be divided vertically or diagonally, the upgraded technology can also achieve “all-round focus.” Samsung claims that the diagonal method allows the “focusing agent” to better identify the top and bottom of the frame.

Samsung’s latest 50MP camera sensor also brings interlaced HDR functionality, which is lacking in Isocell GN1. This sounds similar to traditional HDR technology because the sensor can capture short, medium and long exposures. But it is said that this method can reduce power consumption by 24% compared to the real-time HDR seen on previous sensors.

Both the earlier sensor and the new sensor have Smart ISO technology, which intelligently selects the best ISO for the scene. But Samsung Isocell GN2 also brings Smart ISO Pro function, what’s the difference?

“Compared with Smart ISO that uses a single ISO reading for each picture, Smart ISO Pro that uses an in-scene double conversion gain (iDCG) solution can read data from both high and low ISO, thereby reducing Pixels instantly create high dynamic range image motion artifacts.” Samsung explained in an email press release. It added that Smart ISO Pro can also capture and process multiple frames of high ISO, thereby raising it to nearly one million ISO in extremely dark scenes.

Very similar to previous sensors, Isocell GN2 can also generate 100MP images through its 50MP sensor. This is achieved by creating “three independent 50MP frame layers of green, red and blue” and then using a mosaic algorithm to generate 100MP photos. We guess that the 108MP sensor might be better on the actual 100MP+ image.

Samsung’s new 50MP sensor can also play a role in the video field, capturing 4K/120fps slow motion or 480fps video in FHD. You will also get 8K/24fps recording, which seems a bit degraded on paper compared to GN1’s 8K/30fps function.

Isocell GN2 is currently in mass production, which shows that we will see it soon. In terms of its value, Vivo is the only brand that uses Isocell GN1 in its mobile phones. But the eye-catching Ice Universe believes that the new sensor will fall in the Mi 11 Ultra. Xiaomi previously used the Omnivision 48MP sensor in the Mi 10 Ultra, and Omnivision recently launched its own 50MP sensor. Therefore, we need to wait and see to see if the new Xiaomi phones have Samsung sensors.
