Wal-Mart is turning four of its stores into laboratories to test ways to transform the retailer’s huge physical footprint into a stronger advantage of e-commerce.

The giant company said on Thursday that it will designate two stores near its Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters, and the other two will be announced later. The company said that stores and their employees will try various methods to better integrate physical and digital businesses and improve the customer experience.

Like other retailers, Walmart has seen more online sales shifts during the coronavirus pandemic. In the second quarter ended July 31

, Wal-Mart’s e-commerce sales almost doubled. However, even before the global health crisis broke out, Wal-Mart was still focused on using its many stores to surpass Amazon and other competitors.

For this new job, employees will use digital tools, store design features and different strategies to speed up purchases and online orders. They will test an app that uses artificial intelligence to scan multiple boxes in the back room, rather than scanning one box at a time when moving them to the store. They will use new store signs and handheld devices to reduce the time required to select online orders. Product and technical teams will be stationed in the store to speed up prototyping.

Wal-Mart will also try to better synchronize its clothing categories in test stores. Some garments are currently not listed online. If the shirts or sweaters on the store and on the website are the same, the customer has more ways to obtain these items-such as picking up the item by the roadside to retrieve the item or ship it to the home.

The company said it will also patch up the checkout area, test designs, hardware and software to make customers’ purchases faster, easier and more contactless.

John Crecelius, senior vice president of Wal-Mart’s by-products and next-generation stores in the United States, said in a post on the company’s website that simple changes can work. He said, for example, with the addition of signs and handheld devices, in certain difficult product categories, the number of times employees found products for the first time after choosing an online order increased by 20%. The sign is inspired by the airport terminal, with letters and numbers.

He said that Walmart will announce more ways to use its stores to drive online growth.

Wal-Mart has more than 4,700 stores in the United States, and more than 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of one of the stores. This can make them a convenient hub for fulfilling online orders for curbside pickup or delivery.
