The sacrament has issued a note listing the procedures followed by pastors around the world to distribute ashes at the beginning of Lent.
The health conditions caused by Covid-19 continue to force changes in people’s daily lives, and this is also reflected in the realm of the church.
Before the start of Lent, on Wednesday, February 17, the Sacred Worship and Sacrament Discipline Committee issued a note detailing how Catholic priests distribute ashes.
Instructions for use
After blessing the ashes and sprinkling holy water in the silence, the pastor extended his condolences to the people present, reciting the formula in the Roman suicide note: “Repent and believe in the gospel”
At that point, the note continued, and the priest “washed his hands, put on a mask, and spread the ashes to those who came to him, or if appropriate, he went to the ashes scattered by those who stood in his place.”
Then, he “unverbally” scattered the ashes on everyone’s head.
