Vatican City- One of the highest-ranked cardinals in the Catholic Church unexpectedly resigned from the Vatican on September 24. The city-state did not give any explanation for the dismissal.
The Vatican made a surprising announcement later in Rome, stating that the Italian Cardinal Angelo Beggio had resigned as the head of the office responsible for overseeing the cause of the Catholic saints, and announced that he had waived “rights related to the cardinal.”
The announcement did not provide more details, but the cardinal rarely took such actions. The last cardinal to give up his cardinal rights was the Scottish Cardinal Keith O̵
Since August 2018, Becciu has served as the president of the Saints Business. He served as the Secretary of State in the Vatican and is often referred to as the head of the Pope’s Office.
Earlier, there were rumors that Bergio was connected to a controversial transaction in which the Vatican invested in a development project in London.
The Vatican police have been investigating the transaction for several months. In October 2019, they conducted a very unusual raid on the Secretary of State’s Office, collecting documents and electronic equipment suspected of being related to the transaction.
The Vatican only stated in its brief statement on September 24 that Pope Francis had accepted Beckio’s resignation and the rights of cardinals. It seems to indicate that Bejo is only the cardinal in the title and will not be able to attend any gatherings in the future.
The Vatican Press Office did not immediately respond to requests for more information to understand the reasons for Beggio’s resignation or to clarify his cardinal status.
Becciu previously denied allegations of improper conduct in London real estate transactions, and Italian media said it was a profitable opportunity to upgrade office space to luxury apartments.
The cardinal said in February: “Investment was made in the building.” “That was a great opportunity, and many people envy us today.”
Beggio was a diplomat in the Vatican, the city-state ambassador to Angola led by Pope John Paul II, and the Cuban ambassador to Cuba led by Pope Benedict XVI. The future cardinal began his position as Secretary of State at the Vatican in 2011.
Francis appointed Beggio as the congregation of the saints in May 2018 and appointed him as cardinal in June 2018. During his tenure in the Office of the Saints, Beggio presided over the canonization of many famous people, including the marvelous Archbishop Oscar Romero of Salvador.
