MyHeritage, a company that “discovers family history” (as they describe), has released “Deep Nostalgia”, which uses AI to animate photos. Upload a picture, and AI will generate a gif, which will smile, blink and move your eyes.
It is based on D-ID technology, yowsa is disturbing!
I’m sure that some people will make touching animated photos of their grandfather. Personally, I find it a) super fun technically, and b) creepy skin.Even MyHeritage itself pointed out in its FAQ One person’s mileage may vary at this……
This technology is fascinating, but a bit weird, don’t you think?
Some people like the Deep Nostalgia™ function and think it is magical, while others find it creepy and don̵7;t like it. Indeed, the results may be controversial, and it is difficult to remain indifferent to the technology. We invite you to use this feature to create videos and share them on social media to understand what your friends and family think. This feature is intended for nostalgic use, even if the beloved ancestor is resurrected. Our driver videos do not contain speech to prevent abuse of that speech, such as creating a “study” video of a living person. Please use this feature on your own historical photos, not on photos of living people without permission.
MyHeritage uses this market as a way to animate old family photos, but as far as I know, nothing prevents anyone from using it to animate new photos. So: How will this be used to deceive and abuse people? It will happen, and despite exactly what form it will take, I am not offended.
