A processing plant of the Russian mining giant Norilsk Nickel Company partially closed down, killing three people.
According to Reuters, at the time of Saturday’s incident, the processing plant was undergoing maintenance.
The outlet pointed out that after a major fuel leak from a power plant near the Russian city of Norilsk and a number of minor accidents in 2020, the production safety of Norilsk Nickel Company has been subject to strict public scrutiny.
Since then, Norilsk has pledged to invest $1.4 billion in five years to establish its industrial safety measures.
“This accident clearly shows that these efforts are not enough. We take responsibility for what happened and will strengthen the requirements for industrial safety and the personnel responsible for it,”
According to Nornickel, the plant is still operating under some restrictions. Reuters reported that a regional committee conducted a criminal investigation into the incident.
The company was fined $2 billion earlier this month for damage caused by a fuel leak last year. A regional committee conducted a criminal investigation into the incident.
