“The play date is almost done.” This is the gist of the latest update of Panic’s upcoming pint-sized handheld console. The company said it will start accepting orders for the equipment priced at US$149 in early 2021 and start production in November. The first batch will include 20,000 units. Panic said it believes this is sufficient to meet the initial needs. It added: “We also pray that we don’t madly increase it too much, because that would be embarrassing.”
After sending the first 20,000 units, the company plans to continue to use the open order system to deliver new Playdate units in batches. The hope here is to avoid the situation where the device was once “sold out” by NVIDIA’s Ampere GPU. As a customer, you can buy Playdate at any time, and Playdate should arrive at your home based on the time you ordered. The box you see above is the packaging that will arrive at your home.
