A team of researchers from CSIRO Energy, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, and the Victoria Museum have documented multiple sightings of large fin squid deep in the Great Australian Strait.In their published papers One number passThe team described their research on unique creatures and their understanding of creatures.
The large fin squid lives deep in the ocean for several reasons. The first is that they are rare in the wild-researchers have only recorded 12 sightings. They also have unique fins that protrude from the side of the head at an angle similar to Dumbo’s ears, although in water rather than in air, they achieve the same purpose. Their antennae are also longer than the body. They live thousands of meters deep in the ocean.
Due to their remoteness, apart from their general physical characteristics, little is known about the large-fin squid. This discovery is the first in Australia’s Great Bay Area (a huge open bay on the southern coast of the country). In addition, this is the first time that squid has been observed in various forms. Although they are hundreds of meters apart, they obviously share part of the ocean. The squid is usually a loner.
Another first step is to perform laser measurements on a specimen: an albacore squid whose body (mantle) is 15 cm long. Its antennae are as high as 1.8 meters, which is impressive. All previous measurements of large-fin squid were estimated based on background information (such as other fish nearby).
Researchers discovered squids during underwater surveys on the coastline. When they encountered the first specimen, they deployed more tools to get a better appearance. They used both remote-controlled underwater vehicles and towed cameras. In total, they conducted more than 40 hours of underwater observation at a depth of 950 to 2400 meters, and finally obtained five rare cuttlefish shots.
