The state’s fire chief said the fire that killed West Virginia Air National Guard firemen earlier Sunday was arson.
WSAZ of the Huntington branch of the National Broadcasting Corporation reported that the firefighter, whose name has not yet been announced, was responding to a fire in Martinsburg in the northeast corner of the state.
Officials said that there were two arson incidents in the early hours of Sunday morning, one at 2 am when the firefighter died, and the other at around 1:30 am in nearby Jefferson County.
The chief of the fire department said on Twitter that the fire started in an unused building about 3 miles away.
The sheriff has not publicly identified any suspects and provided information rewards.
