Texas 14-year-old research COVID 19 treatment wins $25,000

Frisco, Texas-A 14-year-old child won $25,000 for her potential treatment work for COVID-19.

Anika Chebrolu is from Frisco, Texas, and she is known as the top young scientist in the United States.

She told KTVT: “It’s exciting. I’m still trying to handle everything.”

As an eighth grader, Chebrolu won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge for his work on potential drugs for the treatment of COVID-19.

She said: “I developed this molecule, which can bind to a certain protein on the SARS-CoV-2 virus. By binding to the protein, it will stop the function of the protein.”

Chebrolu began to study ways to fight seasonal flu, but like many professional scientists, when the COVID-1

9 pandemic, her plan also changed. To find her potential drug, she used multiple computer programs to determine how and where the molecule binds to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is not clear whether her research has been tested in cells or in living models.

She said that the scope of the pandemic and stories about people suffering inspired her work. She also praised her grandfather for pushing her to flourish in the field of science.

“Grandfather, when I was young, he always pushed me to science. He was actually a professor of chemistry. He always told me to study the periodic table and learn all about science over time. Just Fall in love with it.”
