Spotify hopes to convert more original podcasts into TV shows and movies.The company today announced a partnership with Chernin Entertainment, the production company behind it Ford v Ferrari, Hidden characterswith New girl, To develop Spotify’s proprietary and original podcast TV and movie trailers. The “first glance” partnership means that Chernin will gain the first advantage in the development of Spotify IP. Spotify said its library now includes more than 250 original exhibitions, and Chernin can start with these original exhibitions.
Chenin said in a prepared statement: “Spotify has one of the largest independent IP libraries in the world today, and it is adding to it every day.”
Converting podcasts into movies and shows has proven to be a potential means of making money for the company.Chernin, Spotify and Pineapple Street Media are already collaborating on Liquidation, Gimlet Media, now owned by Spotify, also broadcasts its programs Homecoming Become a Prime Video original series.
Podcasts are cheaper and easier to produce than TV shows, and can prove the value of a story before the studio commits to funding expensive screen productions. Even movie stars like Rami Malek have starred in fictional podcasts, portraying themselves as audio stars, and possibly acting through visual adaptations of performances.
Spotify’s collaboration with Chernin means that it already has a reputable production company and is looking for opportunities to take advantage of the company’s product catalog without Spotify working in Hollywood.
