Some users cannot use the Flash storage of the Core i5 Pixel Slate

Since its launch at the end of 2018, Google’s Pixel Slate has been a huge disaster. It’s no secret. Google is betting on making a compelling tablet with Chrome OS, but the software’s quirks, overpriced, and clumsy tablet experience make it a painful product to use. The good news is that Google has fixed most of the weird software bugs and updated them, resulting in a greatly improved user experience, with almost no hindrance to your workflow as before. However, Pixel Slate is once again in trouble and cannot be easily fixed by updating the software.

Multiple i5 Pixel Slate owners are experiencing file system issues, causing their devices to enter read-only mode after a period of time. Reddit user u/JeffHiggins managed to capture a log of the exact time when the file system was remounted to read-only.

As we can see in the logs, Chrome OS will output multiple I/O errors before Pixel Slate remounts its file system as read-only. Especially interesting is “ext4_journal_check_start: 56: abort log detected“with”cmd response 0x0, card status 0x0”. This indicates that the connection to the flash memory has been lost. The reason may be that the flash memory is damaged, and the port failure caused the bridge to bridge the Pixel Slate motherboard. Based on our understanding of the output, this problem is caused by a hardware failure in the Pixel Slate Caused, although this log was captured about a year ago, there are more Pixel Slate owners experiencing this issue today.

User-oriented symptoms will be mild at first, such as a website icon that suddenly switches to a gray generic icon when accessing a bookmark. Eventually, Android apps will start to crash in the background and annoy you with intermittent pop-up dialogs. The Android application cannot be launched, and any operations involving writing files to disk (including creating folders and downloading files) will fail. Restarting or resetting the Pixel Slate can temporarily fix it, but the problem will appear randomly, sometimes within a few minutes or days after startup. Performing strong cleaning, reinstalling the operating system by restoring USB, and switching to other distribution channels will not solve those affected issues.

Pixel Slate Google Support

A customer of Pixel Slate reported this issue about a year ago. A large number of other affected customers also reported the same symptoms, so this report became a trend.Source: Google Support Community

Two Pixel Slate owners have deeply documented the issue with the read-only file system, and they have contacted us regarding this issue. Like several others in the Reddit and Google support community, these two users have exhausted all the troubleshooting steps to find a solution, but no luck. Although some customers can get replacement products during the warranty period, many owners have passed that expiration date and found themselves unable to receive Google support. Multiple bug reports have been submitted on the bug tracker many times, of which there are several stars, but the attention of developers is zero.

We contacted Google to learn about the i5 variant of Pixel Slate. A representative told us that Google has not replicated or identified the cause of this misconduct. However, they ensure that the Google product team is actively looking for the root cause of these user problems. At the same time, the representative advised the affected people to follow these help center steps. We will update this article when we hear more information.
