Four children and three adults were found dead on Friday in a rural estate near the Margaret River wine region of Western Australia, apparently through suicide with two nearby weapons.
The police said they had answered an early morning telephone call and arrived to find a "horrific incident" in the small town of Osmington, near the world-famous wine-growing region south of Perth.
"At the time, I can only say that we have no public security information issues," Western Australian police chief Chris Dawson said.
"We still are not in touch with other members of the family so at this time, all I'm going to confirm is that there are four children and three adults who were all deceased."
The age of Children were not released.
Dawson said there seemed to be gunshot wounds, "but I do not want to go further, as two firearms were found at the scene."
Mass shootings are not common in Australia, where strict gun laws apply. All weapons must be registered, although many are illegally arrived by organized syndicates from abroad.
If confirmed as a mass shooting, the incident would have been in Australia since a 1996 massacre, killing 35 people in Port Arthur, Tasmania. 19659010] It was believed that the deceased lived on the property, about 10 minutes' drive from Margaret River, a popular tourist destination known for its wine, surf and natural beauty.
Felicity Haynes, who lives on a neighboring property, told ABC The participating families were "caring neighbors".
"They were just such lovely people," she said.
"You were a very socially conscious family that did its best to create a secure community, and that's it. Why is it so shocking to think that it could be destroyed so quickly."
Dawson refused to point out who was the person who alerted the police, their relationship with the victims or whether they heard shots every life is tragi "But four children and three adults, this is a major tragedy," he said, adding that the police and other specialists would be on site for at least a few days.
"This will be a very extensive and detailed investigation."
Augusta-Margaret River Shire President Pamela Townsend said the incident had hit everyone in the area.
"It sends shockwaves through the whole community – we're all connected in one way or another, every family," she told WA Today.
