Senators, Diabetes Association call for price transparency, solutions such as insulin price tips

A new white paper from the American Diabetes Association on the high insulin price suggests ways in which healthcare providers can help minimize the cost of their patients

"Insulin Access and Affordability Working Group: Conclusions and Recommendations "was published online Tuesday in Diabetes Care and purposely coincided with a hearing on the rising cost of insulin held by the US Senate Special Committee on Aging.

"The average list price of insulin has skyrocketed in recent years and has almost tripled between 2002 and 2013," reports the working group. "The reasons for this increase are not very clear, but partly due to the complexity of drug pricing, especially insulin prices."

At the hearing, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) mentioned interest rate increases, even for the oldest versions of the drug , "untenable".

"It has become a treatment barrier for many Americans," Collins noted. "Why are discounts not negotiated with manufacturers who reach the patient, especially the uninsured patient, but also the insured and a high deductible?"

The ADA warns healthcare providers that rising prices for community-living diabetics may be less likely to follow their treatment plans and to note that they should "properly prescribe all forms of insulin based on evidence-based medicine".

Too little controlled diabetes can lead to serious consequences such as heart disease, stroke, blurred vision, and amputations. All of this can lead to a need for more intensive health care, such as: B. qualified care lead.

The ADA working group called for transparency throughout the insulin supply chain and addressed its recommendations to insulin manufacturers, pharmacies, health plans, and pharmacy usage managers.
