U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Is calling for a boycott by knocking on staff from the University of California and announcing on Monday that she will not serve as speaker at UC Berkeley ceremonies.
Harris said she "regrettably" will not attend Saturday's spring break due to the labor dispute and the demand for a university-wide spokesman boycott. Instead, Chancellor Carol Christ of UC Berkeley will give the keynote speech.
Harris says she wants the estimated 5,800 students "succeed for the future."
Thousands of UC Trustees, Guards, Gardeners and Other Service Workers Started with Three (19659005) The Associated Press reported that UC Davis Medical Center officials were forced to reschedule more than 100 cancer screenings and 150 radiology examinations.
The American Federation of State, County and Community 3299 officials called for a strike according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The union has 25,000 service employees
The report said that medical workers sympathizing with the strikers would be on strike for the next few days. Essential patient care is provided, the report said. However, hundreds of operations have been postponed.
Claire Doan, a spokeswoman for the UC system, said that service workers were already above market price and now demanded a salary increase of nearly 20 percent over three years  "A disruptive demonstration will neither be the economic situation UC is still changing the position of the university regarding the inappropriate demands of AFSCME, "said Doan.
