Roborace crash shows how difficult it is for autonomous driving



One of the main points in defending motorsport is how to help the development of new technologies for cars. If you think of Roborace, that is the strongest reason to create it. In addition to saving the lives of some pilots in very fast and ultimately dangerous races, this category also aims to help develop autonomous driving. The irony is that it depends on whether you are ready to start. The crash shows that not only is competition likely to be far away: the same is true for self-driving cars.

The incident that you can see in the video above took place at Thruxton Racetrack in the UK on October 29th last year. This is what Roborace calls the first round of the Beta season.

Roborace DevBot 2.0

There are currently six participating teams: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pisa, Carnegie Mellon University, Graz Autonomous Racing, Arrival Racing and Acronis SIT Autonomy. The car that hit the wall was the last one.

Roborace consists of these six teams using the same electric car. DevBot 2.0 (which can also be piloted by a human pilot) uses the Nvidia DRIVE platform. The only difference between it and its competitors is the artificial intelligence driver software developed by the team.

In addition to the race track, if the vehicles can perform certain tasks, they can also handle virtual environments with prizes. Called Metaverse, it is a form of mixed reality racing. This means that the trajectory has been mapped so that the virtual reality environment can be inserted in the game.

The accident shows that even if the weather is good, reality is still the main problem. If it is raining, the car may spin due to low friction conditions, but this is not the case. The difficulty lies in enabling the car to drive autonomously.

If you can get such results in a map environment with good weather, then take it to the street (there are more unpredictable variables at play), it will multiply.
