After shaved his head last year, Ricki Lake began a decades-long struggle with hair loss.
The actress and former talk show host, 52, revealed on Instagram in July 2020 that after fighting hair loss for more than 30 years, she made the difficult decision to shave her head.
“Here… I have been struggling with hair loss most of my adult life,” Lake shared at the time. “It makes people feel depressed, embarrassed, painful, fearful, depressed, lonely, everything. A few times I even suicidal about it.”
Now, after a year of growth, Lake made her debut on Wednesday’s “Good Morning America”, discussing her journey of “liberation”

She said: “Last year was such a big right, because the leap of faith shaved my head. Fortunately, my hair has grown back.” “Moreover, I am truly letting go of what has been bothering me for decades. I learned a lot in the process.”
Not only has her hair grown, the star also said that she is very excited that she no longer needs to hide her fight for hair loss, and pointed out that she hopes that her story will also help others reduce the burden.
She said: “Some things in life keep you secret.” “I was harassed when I was a kid. I kept it quiet for many years. Once you admit that this happened to you, the secret will not be like your shoulders. So heavy. For me, this is such a beautiful gift that can be cleaned up with something I am ashamed of.”
The star even wanted to write a book about her experience of struggling with hair loss and her decision to shave her head.

In an interview, Lake added: “Countless people came to me to applaud, and they said:’Where did you find courage?'” “If I can help a lady by sharing my story, it will be worth it.”
She also pointed out that she started to embrace her natural gray hair and added that women are often told not to accept aging.
Last year, Lake explained that she believed that hair loss began in 1988, when she played Tracy Turnblad in the original “Hairspray.”
She explained on Instagram: “They triple-treated and combed my healthy virgin hair every two weeks during the shooting.” “My hair is never the same. (Yes, that’s what I have in the movie. Hair.) From hairspray to hairless.”
However, Lake listed many other factors that she believes caused the problem.

She wrote: “As far as I am concerned, I think hair loss is caused by many factors, including: yo-yo diet, hormonal birth control, dramatic fluctuations in weight over the years, pregnancy, genetics, stress, and dyeing and lengthening hair.” “Whether it is DWTS or talk shows, as a talented person in various shows and movies, it has also caused damage to my hair.”

Lake revealed that she tried dozens of solutions, including various extensions and wigs, which made her feel “consciously uncomfortable.” She also revealed that she took supplements and received steroid injections, but there was no result.
