ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Cowboys interviewed Panthers assistant coach Jason Simmons on Sunday to learn about their vacant defensive coordinator position.

Simmons, 44, is Carolina’s defensive pass coordinator and second-level coach.

Simmons was with Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy at Green Bay. Simmons has worked for the Packers since the 2011-19 season. Before serving as an administrative assistant, he first served as an administrative assistant, then as an assistant special team coach, and then as a second-level coach.

He joined the Panthers before the 2020 season.

The Cowboys are also expected to talk to Falcons’ second-level coach and passing game coordinator Joe Whitt on Sunday.

Dallas fired Mike Nolan on Friday.

The Cowboys averaged 473 points, surpassing the team’s 436 points in 2010. The allowed 2,541 rushing yards were just below the 2,636 team record allowed in 2000.
