According to a new report, Google will launch a custom smartphone chip this fall, probably together with Pixel 6. There are rumors that the company is exploring the development of its own custom system on chip (SoC), and this year may finally be the year of its debut.

According to reports, Google is cooperating with Samsung Semiconductor’s System Large Scale Integration (SLSI) department to develop Whitechapel. This means that Google’s chips may have similarities to Samsung’s Exynos, including software components, 9to5Google Said. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has previously mocked the company’s “deeper investment in hardware,” and Whitechabell may be like that.
9to5Google It claims that it saw a document confirming Google’s upcoming plan. “In the documentation, Whitechapel is used with the codename “Slider”-we also found a reference in the Google Camera app,” 9to5Google Said. “From our piece together, we believe that Slider is the first Whitechapel SoC sharing platform. Internally, Google refers to the chip as “GS101”, and “GS” may be an abbreviation for “Google Silicon”.
According to previous reports, Google’s chip will have an eight-core ARM CPU, including two Cortex-A78 + two Cortex-A76 + four Cortex-A55 cores. It will also be equipped with an off-the-shelf ARM Mali GPU and manufactured using Samsung’s 5nm manufacturing process. Based on this, we expect Whitechapel to become a mid-range chip comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 series.
The main benefit of switching to a custom chip is that you can better control driver updates. Google will no longer rely on Qualcomm to update the driver, so it can update the driver longer to make it compatible with the new version of Android. Compared with the current 3rd generation support currently available for Pixel devices, we may even see 5th generation Android OS updates supporting these new chips.
Google has previously manufactured custom chips, and in 2017 developed the Pixel Visual Core for Pixel 2 in cooperation with Intel. In this regard, Google can integrate Pixel Visual Core into the SoC, making it possible to enable new camera features in the upcoming Pixel 6. Compared with buying chips from Qualcomm or Samsung, the cost of manufacturing and using custom SoCs may also be lower.

Update 1: Confirmation
After reading some internal documents related to Google’s next Pixel device, XDA It can now be confirmed that Google is developing a new GS101 chip for its 2021 Pixel phone. According to our sources, it appears that the SoC will have 3 cluster settings and a TPU (Tensor Processing Unit). Google also refers to its next-generation Pixel devices as “phones equipped with seamless devices,” and we believe they have an integrated Titan M security chip (code-named “Citadel”).
