A team of two physicists at the University of Sussex found a way to circumvent the 178-year history, which means they can effectively eliminate distant magnetic fields. They are the first to be able to do this in a practical way.

This is an international collaboration between Dr. Mark Bason and Jordi Prat-Camps of the University of Sussex and Rosa Mach-Batlle and Nuria Del-Valle of the University of Barcelona University of Automation and other institutions.

The “Earnshaw Theorem” of 1842 limited the ability to shape magnetic fields. The team was able to calculate an innovative method to circumvent the theory, thereby effectively eliminating other magnetic fields that may confuse the experimental readings.

In fact, they achieved this goal by creating a device composed of carefully laid out wires. This generates other magnetic fields, which cancel out the effects of harmful magnetic fields. For many years, scientists have been working hard to meet this challenge, but now the research team has found a new strategy to solve these problem areas. Although a similar effect has been achieved at higher frequencies, this is the first time it has been achieved at low frequencies and static fields (such as biological frequencies), which will release many useful applications.

Other possible future applications of this work include:
