Padres names the expensive Infielder Chase Headley for use

Throughout the winter, the San Diego Padres returned the long-time third baseman Chase Headley in a trade that was akin to an accounting streak. The Padres also received right-hander Bryan Mitchell from the New York Yankees in exchange for outfielder Jabari Blash and salary relief by losing $ 13 million to Headley's salary

The Padres hoped Headley, their second best player, could perform well enough to attract interest at the close of trading. As it turns out, Headley will be in a different team until August 1

– heck, he'll be in a different team before June 1st. That's because the Padres chose Headley on Saturday and give them 10 days to find a trade grant him a release:

Of the two options, a release seems more likely. 34-year-old Headley scored only .115 / .233 / .135 on 60 record appearances this year, well below his average of .262 / .335 / .386. Combine Headley's poor play with the sustained energy overheating that Christian Villanueva showed (he kicked on Saturday at .232 / .317 / .518) and that was enough for the pads to keep going.

Mitchell by the way did not do that better. In eight appearances (seven starts) he has counted a 6.21 ERA and has 11 more walks than strikeouts. For his part, Blash is no longer a member of the Yankees organization.

Headley had previously spent eight seasons with the Padres. He finishes his San Diego career with a 111 OPS + and 18.7 Wins Above substitute.
