Previous research assumed that on Mars, this phenomenon occurred when gas was reduced instead of carbon dioxide, which meant that the Earth’s atmosphere must be reduced. Liu and his team finally found this evidence when investigating spacecraft data on rocks cremated by the spacecraft, which showed signs of exposure to this atmosphere.
Liu said: “The separation between the iron and aluminum in the ancient Martian soil is comparable to the trend observed in the ancient soil before the Great Oxidation event on Earth, indicating that the ancient Martian surface was chemically weathered in a reduced greenhouse atmosphere.”
The orbiter conducted remote inspections of rocks on the surface of Mars. The spacecraft is equipped with an instrument with an infrared spectrometer that reveals the chemical properties of these primitive rocks. When infrared light hits a target, it will interact with the molecules that make up the target. How the object in question absorbs, reflects or emits this light can release its chemical composition. What researchers want to know is the composition of ancient soil on Mars, which was formed a long time ago and is physically and chemically unrelated to the recently formed soil. This is how they determined the chemical signs of weathering caused by the reduced atmosphere.
Mars later experienced an oxidation event, which is different from the Earth’s major oxidation event on Earth, although the time of occurrence is different, and the cause may be different. Because oxygen is a by-product of photosynthesis and other processes in the early organisms, the earth’s atmosphere is oxidized. Proving that Mars has reduced the atmosphere before the oxidation event, which may mean that life has participated in the transformation in some way.
When Perseverance investigates Jezero Crater, more evidence may be found to support this discovery, perhaps even fossil microbes.
