New Zealand 8.1 magnitude earthquake triggers tsunami warning

New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency said the strong earthquake was the third time it hit the area on Friday morning.

The agency stated on its website that people in coastal areas must “move immediately outside all tsunami refuge areas or as far inland as possible. Do not stay at home.”

Tsunami warnings include the east coast of the North Island from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei, from Matata to Tolaga Bay, including Whakatane and Opotiki, and the Great Barrier Island.

The agency’s statement said: “The earthquake may not be felt in some of these areas, but you should evacuate immediately because it may cause a destructive tsunami.”

“People in all other areas who experience long-term or strong earthquakes and have difficulty standing or lasting more than one minute should immediately move to the nearest high ground, stay away from all tsunami evacuation areas, or enter as far inland as possible.

The statement added that the evacuation notice will cover Covid-1

9 advisories.
