New rift in Iceland volcano spews lava and hundreds of hikers are evacuated

A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted in late March. The volcano erupted a new fissure, forcing hundreds of hikers to evacuate on Monday. The volcano, about 20 miles from Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, has caused tens of thousands of earthquakes in the past three weeks. Since the resurrection of the volcano, tourists have flocked to the hot scene, with an estimated 30,000 tourists. Iceland’s emergency management department said the new crack found on Monday was about 550 yards long, but there is no immediate threat to life because it is far away from the hiking trail. Even so, the entire area was still evacuated. Geophysicist Magnus Gudmundsson told the Associated Press that volcanic activity may be entering the second phase and moving north. He said: “Now, we see that the lava from the two primitive craters has decreased.”

; “This may be the beginning of the second phase.”
