New research shows that so-called “hypertension” may be different for men and women

“Actually, there is no’one-size-fits-all’ approach in medicine. We really have to look at men and women differently,” said Dr. Rachel Berg of Virginia Heart.

Traditionally, 120 over 80 is considered the upper limit of normal for adult systolic blood pressure, but a study by the Smidt Heart Institute in Cedars-Sinai evaluated data from more than 27,000 people and found that women’s “normal”

; blood pressure may be in the lower range .

Berger said: “Although the correlation between men’s high blood pressure and heart disease is higher, such as 120 or 140, even if the blood pressure is as low as 100 or 110, women’s risk of heart disease will increase.”

Women need to know their number.

Berger recommends: “This means knowing your blood pressure level and talking to your doctor, and determining if this is right for you.”

Berg found that research such as this to assess blood pressure and heart disease risk is very important because it may change the way doctors tailor medical practices for different groups of people, especially women.

Berg said: “A lot of what we do in the medical field is based on large-scale research, and traditionally there may not be women involved.” “And, compared with men, women may have different goals.”

Many pharmacies have free self-service kiosks for checking blood pressure values. They also sell equipment that you can use at home. Berger said that the cuff wrapped around the arm is more reliable than the cuff attached to the wrist.

If you sit and relax for a few minutes, you are more likely to get accurate results. If the reading is high, wait a few minutes, and then check again to see if the number decreases.

Conditions that may cause blood pressure to rise include excessive stress, anxiety, or high caffeine intake. Berger recommends checking blood pressure at different times of the day to understand the changes in blood pressure.

Some tips to help control numbers include:

  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Reduce salt intake.
  • Avoid processed foods.
  • Increase activity level.
  • Try to exercise four or five days a week.
