NASA will launch a spacecraft to “shoot” asteroids to prevent future impact



If an asteroid heads to the earth, what should we do to prevent it from hitting the earth?

In serious scientific discussions and sci-fi works, asteroid collisions have been prevented. However, the proposed and displayed solutions are different.

However, NASA scientists have actually made a plan to “rush out” an asteroid, or in other words, a spacecraft crashed into the asteroid head-on.

This concept seems absurd, almost like a joke on April Fool’s Day. But the project is very real and has entered the planning and development stage.

The project is called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission and is jointly developed by NASA and Johns Hopkins University̵

The technology involved is described in detail on the NASA website, including their so-called “dynamic impactor” technology, which should be able to change the motion of asteroids in space.

Its working principle is that the spacecraft will directly hit the asteroid at a speed of about 6.6 kilometers per second. This will force the asteroid to change its orbital speed. It will only change one percent of it, but it is enough to be observed and measured by astronomers with telescopes.

The launch window of the spacecraft will be opened for the first time in late July and will be launched by the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It will then fly into space for the first test in the Didymos asteroid system. It is expected that humans will conduct their first istic destruction battle with asteroids in September 2022, when the spacecraft will enter the system.

APL astronomer and head of the DART survey team Andy Rivkin told Vice News: “So far, we don’t have much choice if we find something that is coming.”

“DART is the first test of how we can deflect something without having to resort to a nuclear weapon kit or sitting in our basement, waiting for it and crossing our fingers.”

The nuclear option mentioned by Rifkin is one of the most common methods of destroying asteroids in popular culture. In essence, it will see the use of nuclear weapons to blow up asteroids.

This idea is incredible and can bring impressive visual effects to science fiction movies. However, in real life, this idea is not ideal at best, and at worst it may bring catastrophic consequences. This is because destroying the asteroid will result in the formation of smaller rocks, and the rocks may still move towards the planet. If they pass through the earth’s atmosphere, the damage they may cause will still be serious.

The DART project is more subtle, piercing the asteroid into a lighter jab instead of an explosive nuclear bomb.

Rivkin acknowledged this and told Vice (Vice Chairman) that, in fact, scientists just wanted to see what would happen and told the news media: “If the asteroid wants you to stay awake at night, then Let them be excited to know how cool they are without worrying about it.”
