The Perseverance was launched on July 30, 2020, in the early morning sun on the Florida coast of the United Launch Alliance Atlas V. It has traveled from Earth to Mars in the past seven months, protected from the harsh space environment of the Mars 2020 spacecraft.

When it reached Mars, it abandoned its outer layer and crashed into the weak atmosphere of the red planet. Only ten minutes later, it firmly installed six wheels on the Martian soil of Jezero Crater, a location that scientists believe used to be the lake bed. Where there is water, there is the potential for life-Perseverance will look for signs that Mars was once inhabited by foreign microorganisms.
