Harold and his son are Black, who are guests of a hotel in Lower Manhattan. The woman in the video appears to be white.
The video of his encounter has been widely shared on social media, sparking strong protests, and people think this is another incident of racial profiling against blacks. The hotel apologized and called the woman’s behavior a “baseless accusation, prejudice and attack on innocent guests.”
A spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said his office was “undertaking a thorough investigation” of the incident, and the New York Police Department told CNN that it had filed a complaint about harassment at the Arlo Soho Hotel.
New York Police Department Detective Chief Rodney Harrison said on Tuesday that investigators are considering assaulting the woman after watching surveillance footage of the incident, and possibly carrying out theft or robbery.
The woman disputed her allegations.
The woman did not come forward, but CNN was the first news organization to talk to her over the phone on Tuesday, and she disputed Harold̵
Although the 22-year-old woman claimed to have been beaten during the dispute, CNN was unable to verify her account with investigators or the hotel where the incident occurred.
In a 20-minute telephone interview, she said that the incident occurred after she first requested to watch the hotel’s surveillance video to try to find out who took her phone. She said she then asked other people in the hotel lobby to “empty their pockets,” and then finally confronted Keyon Harrold Jr., who kept his mobile phone in his pocket.
When talking about the interaction, the lady said: “Everything became more serious then.”
Throughout the phone call, the woman’s description of the incident was sometimes confusing. She provided other information about events before and unrelated to the event that CNN could not confirm.
When asked if she was worried about the accusations she might face and the overall image in the video, she said: “Of course I am worried. That’s not me. I actually… work very hard to make sure that I am always doing the right thing.”
The woman told CNN that she is willing to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, but she has not yet received a call from the New York Police Department, nor has she offered a helping hand. She also said that she was willing to talk to the Harolds.
After she agreed to provide evidence that could help confirm the allegations that she was assaulted, she stopped responding to CNN’s calls and text messages.
CNN has not named her because she said she is worried that her safety has nothing to do with the incident.
CNN also asked the New York Police Department to provide a police report, but declined to provide the report, saying it is usually not in this situation.
Many people who have watched the Harrold tape, including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, have claimed racism. But Harrison said that there is no plan to “accuse” the woman of prejudice.
He said: “The investigation is still at the preliminary stage and there is still a lot of work to be done.” “The complainant is cooperating. I believe that investigators from the first area will arrest the case as soon as possible.”
Harold said the encounter happened on the way to breakfast
The teenager told her “this is my phone call,” and his father told him he didn’t have to explain anything to the woman. The woman approached them and asked to remove the case from the phone.
Then, she patted a male hotel employee on her shoulder and asked him to bring her the phone. She said: “Literally, please return it to me.”
The older Harold replied, “Are you kidding me? Do you think there is only one iPhone in the world?” A man who claimed to be a hotel manager asked to watch the phone, but the teenager’s father refused. The manager said: “I am trying to resolve this situation.”
In the video, when Harrold and his son tried to leave the woman, they approached them and said, “I won’t let him leave my phone.” The video then showed her on the floor, but it is unclear. How she landed there. She approached them again and heard the boy’s father yelling, asking her to let go of his hands before the video was cut.
The teenager said: “To be honest, I don’t know what will happen if my father is not there. “Ask him what he would say if he had the opportunity to talk to that woman, he said he wanted to apologize. Then he said he would ask her: “Why would she do such a thing to a child who has never known you?”
Harrison said that after the incident, the woman’s mobile phone was returned to her at the hotel after she took a ride into the hotel.
The hotel said that “it could have done more” to resolve disputes
He said: “This is terrible at any age, but it is especially offensive to happen to a child.” “To Kane Harold Jr. and his family: I’m sorry, this happened to On you.”
Arlo Hotels said in a statement: “More measures can be taken to escalate the dispute.”
The statement said: “We are deeply frustrated by the recent unfounded accusations, prejudices and violations against innocent guests of the Alor Hotel.” “During further investigation of this incident, we learned that the duty manager immediately responded to the woman’s behavior. Report to the police and the hotel’s security department has intervened to prevent further violence… No Arlo guest-or anyone-may be attacked.”
Kremp said in a statement: “As the racial awareness draws to a close this year, it is deeply disturbing that incidents like this continue to occur in which black children are treated as criminals and are treated as criminals. Treat as a criminal.”
Krupp added: “We strongly urge the Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. to file charges of assault and assault against the woman in order to convey the message that unpleasant, racially motivated behavior is unacceptable. “This is the way to promote change. We also call for a civil rights investigation into the hidden prejudice of the Arrow Hotel’s treatment of Kane.”
