It said on Tuesday that it will provide its own employees, contractors and board members with the new Covid-19 vaccine, a move the company said will provide additional protection to workers involved in the production and delivery of the vaccine.
The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company has approximately 1,200 employees. He said the small amount of vaccine required for the program is separate from the millions of doses Moderna has promised to the US government.
Moderna said it expects to provide about 20 million doses in the United States by the end of this month, and a total of about 200 million doses will be provided by mid-2021
The company’s new policy appears to allow vaccination of certain people who are not among the high-priority groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC stated that the first group of people who should receive the limited initial available vaccine dose are health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities, followed by people 75 years and older and certain basic workers, such as police and manufacturing workers.
The CDC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Moderna spokesperson stated that the policy will help ensure “continuous neutralization of vaccine production in the face of a pandemic.” He said that due to Moderna’s large scale, “we have important employees in all departments of the organization to deal with this pandemic.”

As of February, the company has 88,000 employees worldwide and is currently taking a different approach with the vaccine produced by its partner BioNTech SE.
A spokesperson for the company said that the company plans to vaccinate employees who meet the CDC guidelines. The first batch of employees will become the company’s important workers, including those engaged in manufacturing. The spokesperson said that the company “has no plan to prioritize vaccinations for executives or board members before other high-risk groups.”
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized adults to use the Moderna vaccine for emergency use this month. A large-scale study previously showed that the vaccine is very effective against Covid-19. To date, millions of doses of vaccine have been distributed throughout the United States. Last week, federal health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, received the first dose of Moderna vaccine.
The company said that under the new policy, the company will also vaccinate adult members of workers’ families to reduce the risk of absenteeism and destruction due to Covid-19 infection of a family member. The company is vaccinating voluntarily and confidentially, and bears the cost.
Moderna said it has notified the appropriate health authorities of the plan and will monitor and report vaccination information under FDA authorization.
Moderna officials have previously stated that they have taken measures to reduce the risk of workers contracting the virus, including requiring personnel who must work in their facilities to use personal protective equipment and allowing some employees to work from home.
