LONDON (AP)-On Saturday, millions of people in the UK faced severe restrictions on the new coronavirus, and Scotland and Northern Ireland demanded stricter measures to stop this new virus, which is believed to be spreading faster.
Northern Ireland entered a six-week lockdown, while in Wales, restrictions were relaxed on Christmas Day.
The number of Level 4 people who are subject to the highest limit in England increased by 6 million on Saturday to 24 million, or about 43% of England’s population. The area includes London and many surrounding areas.
Indoor home mixing is not allowed, only basic travel is allowed. Gyms, swimming pools, hairdressers and shops selling non-essential goods have been ordered to close, bars and restaurants can only be taken out. Business groups say these restrictions will cause economic damage to their members.

Concerns about the new British variants triggered a week of border chaos. After France briefly closed its border with the United Kingdom and required all drivers to be tested for coronavirus, on Christmas Day, about 1,000 British soldiers tried to clear a large backlog of trucks in southeast England.
But British Transport Minister Grant Shapps said on Saturday that more than 15,000 pilots had been tested and the backlog of work at a test site at Manston Airport was cleared on Sunday morning. He said on Twitter that only 36 positive tests were reported.

Now, the first cases of the new British variant have been found in France and Spain. The French public health agency said a French man living in England arrived in France on December 19 and tested the new variant on Friday. He has no symptoms and is in isolation at his home in the center of Tours.
At the same time, the health authorities in the Madrid region stated that they have confirmed the British mutation in four people, all of whom are in good health. Regional health chief Enrique Ruiz Escudero (Enrique Ruiz Escudero) said the new strain had arrived when an infected person flew to Madrid airport.
