Microsoft has closed the Cortana app for iOS and Android. This is the latest in a series of measures to end support for Cortana on multiple devices including Microsoft’s own Surface headset. The Cortana app for iOS and Android is no longer supported, and Microsoft has removed it from the App Store and Google’s Play Store.
“As we announced in July, as Cortana continues to develop as a productivity assistant, we will soon discontinue support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS,” Mcrums. “From March 31, 2021, the Cortana content you created (such as reminders and lists) will no longer work in the Cortana mobile app, but can still be accessed through Cortana in Windows.”
Microsoft first launched Cortana for iOS and Android in December 2015. The application was originally designed to connect Windows 10 PCs and mobile phones, but despite a major redesign, it failed to gain widespread attention. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recognized the difficulties the company encountered when competing with other digital assistants a few years ago, which shows that Microsoft no longer sees Cortana as a competitor to Alexa and Google Assistant .
Microsoft once envisioned that the future would be full of refrigerators, toasters and thermostats powered by Cortana. This dream came to an end when the first and only Cortana speaker canceled Microsoft’s digital assistant. Other devices such as GLAS thermostats powered by Cortana are no longer powered by Microsoft’s digital assistant.
However, Cortana has not yet been fully completed. Microsoft still believes in the value of conversational AI, and the company is trying to reposition Cortana as an assistant that can improve Microsoft’s enterprise-oriented products.
