Microsoft is expanding its list of mixed reality tools to include a program called Microsoft Layout that allows users to design and visualize real-world areas in Microsoft HoloLens or a virtual reality headset. The layout allows Windows Mixed Reality users to define a virtual floor plan and then move 3D models in a VR headset to see what a room would look and feel like. Then they can go to a physical location and look at this layout with HoloLens – either alone or with other designers – to see how these new objects would fit in with the existing ones.
There are many existing design tools that do similar things layout, including augmented reality apps that allow you to look at furniture in a room. Microsoft's video suggests that layout is more business-oriented than some of these apps, as users design an efficient factory floor ̵
Microsoft launched their HoloLens headset in Mixed Reality in 2015 and has since created a larger Windows Mixed Reality (formerly "Windows Holographic") product line that includes virtual reality headsets. Microsoft Layout is a step toward expanding Windows Mixed Reality, making it more essential to some of its key customers.
