After Microsoft announced that the program will allow users to create custom data types, Excel is undergoing its most significant reform in years.

Historically, Microsoft Excel only allowed users to use text and numbers. This will be changed in an upcoming update, which will enable customers to import their own data directly into Excel and use it as a data type.

This means that organizations will be able to use their own business data as data types directly in Excel. For example, Microsoft says that companies that have a customer tracking system can import it into Excel (structured in a way they define).

Microsoft says that data types can also be connected to real-time resources. A single cell value can have a set of real-time related information, and customers can quickly refer to this information without constantly returning to the original source for more information.

Microsoft said in a blog: “So far, the Excel grid is flat: it is two-dimensional. You can lay out numbers, text and formulas on a flexible grid, and people have built amazing thing.”

“Although not all data is flat, forcing the data into a 2D structure has its limitations. Using data types, we added a third dimension to the data that can be constructed using Excel. Now, any cell can be in one The group data contains a unit of rich structured data.”

For customers, Excel will automatically connect to Power BI, which means that any data published to the Microsoft business intelligence platform will be provided in Excel as a custom structured data type.

At the same time, Excel customers will be able to use Power Query tools to identify different data sources and convert them into data types. Alternatively, users can create their own data types from scratch using any organizational data source (including files, databases, and online services) through the “Get Data” menu of Excel. The Power Query data type will be automatically updated from the connected data source.
