At 10:30 the next morning after Marcus Rashford’s Champions League hat-trick, rows of people stretched outside the Bideford Community Center in Wythenshawe. It is rainy and cold, but the waiting people need food.

Five miles south of Old Trafford, the mention of Rashford’s name brings a smile, not his football. “I am depressed,” Lindsay Thomas said. “But I think what he did is great.”

This is the heart of Rashford. He went to Barton Lane Elementary School, a 20-minute walk from the hotel. In another life, he was probably wearing a big coat and a woolen hat to go shopping. He grew up with free school meals.

Bideford has reached an arrangement with many local supermarkets and charity FareShare to collect food late at night, which cannot be sold due to commercial reasons.
