Leaders reported 242 new COVID-19 cases, including 2 deaths



San Antonio – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and local health professionals briefed the community on the local response to COVID-19 in a daily briefing on Thursday night.

Nirenberg reported that there were 197,497 COVID-19 cases and 2,678 deaths in Bixas County, with an increase of 242 new cases as of Thursday. Two people died today.

The 7-day rolling average is 329.

City officials also reported that 368 patients were hospitalized, 1

36 patients were in the intensive care unit, and 72 were on ventilators. There are 9% of staff beds and 67% of ventilators.

There were 51 hospital admissions in the last 24 hours.

Nirenberg said the total number of hospitalizations is one of the lowest since November.

The mayor said that more than 265,000 people have received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine from the city site. He said that as more doses of the vaccine are expected to arrive next week, Alamodome’s surgery will continue.

Dr. Ruth Berggren of UT Health San Antonio said that a total of 6,072 vaccines were vaccinated in the Bexar County Hospital District, which is the largest day of distribution to date. She said that as of Friday, UT Health San Antonio had received 65,000 vaccines.

Berggren said that UT Health and Metro Health are working to expand their vaccine work to include more people.
