Aces Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer are among the many well-known pitchers. They have been accused by former Angel Club clubhouse attendant Bubba Harkins of using grip-enhancing substances and accused the team and Major League Baseball of him as a scapegoat.

Huggins was fired in March last year as the league began cracking down on the use of foreign objects. He submitted a text message to Cole as evidence against the withdrawal of the original lawsuit filed by Harkins̵

Cole’s message to Harkins started in January 2019 and read: “Hey, Bubba, it’s Gerrit Cole. [winky face emoji]. We will not see you until May, but there will be some road games in cold places in April. When the weather was cold last year, I held on to things…”

Huggins has a reputation throughout the league because he provides pitchers with a grip-enhancing mixture (“polite”), which is made from a mixture of pine tar and rosin. This is what he learned from the long-term angel Troy. One of the earliest recipes learned by Troy Percival.

Although bitumen (including but not limited to pine tar and sunscreen) has been used for a long time (although it is technically illegal), MLB issued a memorandum against this practice in February 2020. The Huggins lawsuit alleges that he did not receive the memo and therefore did not receive proper warning before expelling. Pitchers have long argued that their use of grip-enhancing substances is a safety measure to some extent, and their improved control measures can reduce the possibility of batters or other irregular throws.

The Huggins lawsuit alleges that his dismissal prevented him from working, and pointed out that no one else was punished for similar reasons.
