Since its launch in 2008, NHL outdoor games have received a warm welcome, but due to dangerous ice and snow conditions, Saturday’s installation in Stateline, Nevada, near Lake Tahoe, became a disaster.
The game was postponed in the second stage because players and officials from the Las Vegas Golden Cavaliers and Colorado Avalanche were unable to maintain a foothold even when skating slowly during the timeout. A video even shows hockey sticks digging into the ice like a sled. The league announced that the game will resume late at night, with a 1-0 avalanche record in the second stage.

The sunny landscape background in the game is jaw-dropping. The ice rink is built on the 18th fairway of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort Golf Course, close to the tree-lined coast and surrounded by snow-capped mountains in the distance. An old-fashioned scoreboard hung on the brick wall.
But sunlight and 36 degrees temperature violated safety. The resort originally planned to host parties for two on weekends, including Bruins-Flyers on Sunday.
The NHL’s tradition of playing select games outdoors began in 2003 and became an annual practice in 2008. Many games have been cancelled or postponed for various reasons.
