Edge’s experimental sidebar has been available in Edge Canary since August, but the highly requested features are now available in the developer version of the browser. This brings it closer to the stable version that most of us use. Before that, you can learn about the features in the Dev and Canary versions of Edge Chromium. (We recommend the former, the latter will be much more stable than the latter in daily use.)
All general tab functions are applicable to vertical tabs.Click and drag the labels to change the order in the menu, then click “+” Icon to open a new tab or “X” To close it, and then right-click the label to open the label management menu, where you can pin the label, mute, refresh, etc.
There are also controls perpendicular to the tabs:
- Click and drag the side of the vertical tab bar to resize it
- Click on “<" The icon at the top of the tag list to minimize the column.
After a while of the early incarnation of the Edge vertical tab, I understood why it was so popular. It is much easier to manage and view open tabs, and the list of hidden tabs makes Edge very “open” Feel the layout, especially if you have hidden other toolbars in the browser. In other words, when using the development version, I experienced two unexpected crashes, although this is not necessarily a problem with the vertical tab menu.
Edge Canary and Edge Dev are the most experimental tools built by the insiders of Edge, which contain various adjustments and features for developers to try out, but they are also more unstable-if they are used, they may cause crashes and errors . Fortunately, Edge Dev and Canary are installed as separate applications and will not overwrite the normal Edge browser, so if you encounter problems, you can at least easily switch back.
Another option: Use Chrome’s “Vertical Tab” browser add-on in Edge
We don’t know when the stable version of Edge will get a new tab menu, but you can install it Vertical tab Chrome extension For short-term solutions for browsers that do not require unstable versions,or others, If you particularly dislike this add-on.
The Vertical Tabs add-on can most The same functionality as Edge, with one major exception: the normal horizontal tab menu is still displayed at the top of the browser, not just the vertical tabs. I searched for a way to hide the normal tab bar in the settings of Edge and the additional configuration of Vertical Tabs, but the only option is to browse in full screen mode (F11).
I also noticed some weird errors when enabling “Vertical Tabs” in Edge, such as registering a click in the wrong part of the page. This is especially noticeable (annoying) when clicking to move the cursor in Google Docs.
Based on the time I have used Edge’s “Vertical Tabs” feature and “Vertical Tabs” add-on, if you want to try Edge’s vertical tabs as early as possible, I recommend downloading the Dev or Canary version and using that version.
