Last year, Google announced that the future of Gmail will see chat messages and group chat rooms join existing “video conferencing” integrations. Enterprise Workspace users can already use this feature, and Google now allows personal Gmail accounts to obtain this “integrated workspace”.
Google hopes to make Gmail your new “office home”, thus completing this merger. The purpose is to allow users to complete all operations on one page without having to keep switching between other tabs. Since you might open Gmail on your desktop computer, Google will integrate everything.
Gmail now has four main parts. In the past few months, “mail”
This appears as a bottom bar with four tabs on Android, while the Gmail sidebar on the web is divided into four sections. They are displayed by default, but can be quickly hidden by clicking the chevron. Tapping “Chat” will open the conversation in the lower right corner of the screen. The room will open in full screen and replace the default message list. As shown below, a feature that will be used “in the future” is the ability to make picture-in-picture meeting calls in Gmail.
The functions of these two new tabs are the same as the independent Google chat application, and users can delete the dedicated client. Now, next to the search bar where you can search for “mail and chat” on the web is a status indicator (automatic, do not disturb, set to leave), and these controls are located in the Gmail navigation drawer on your mobile device. Other changes include an updated “outline” icon design throughout the web interface.
Nowadays, many free personal Google accounts can enable the new Gmail with chat function on Android and the web. This experience is not yet available for iOS apps. The enterprise account requires the permission of its administrator. Make sure to install the latest version of Gmail from the Play Store to get started, and warn Google that “you may encounter errors and other problems.”
To gain access, you must enable the “early access” chat feature on each Android device and network and Google account. Activating one will not bring a new experience to all your Gmail instances.
