Google Meet now allows you to use custom backgrounds in video calls

Google announced in a blog post that Google is introducing a custom background for its Meet video conferencing platform. If you use “Meeting” in Google’s Chrome browser, you should be able to access the feature on Chrome OS as well as Windows and Mac laptops and desktops. Google said the feature is “coming soon” to mobile phones.

No need to activate the browser extension to activate the custom background. You should be able to add background images from your own photo collection or from an image library provided by Google that contains landscapes, abstract art, and (for some reason) the office.

The company said that it may take up to a week for all Google Meet users to access the new custom background options.

Competitor video conferencing services Microsoft Teams and Zoom have both allowed the use of custom images as the meeting background. As more and more people rely on video calls to go to work and school at home during the pandemic, new features have been added to these three functions. In recent months, Meet has added a blur effect to the meeting background, and introduced real-time subtitles, low-light mode, manual lifting and tiled views (huge Brady Bunch screen), which can display up to 49 people.

Google integrated Meet into Gmail in May, added a sidebar link, and allowed meetings of up to 100 people, while people without time limits can use Google accounts.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai (Sundar Pichai) said in a third-quarter earnings conference call released on Thursday that Meet holds 235 million meetings a day and more than 7.5 billion video calls a day.
