FDA recalls Sportmix pet food from Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. after 28 dogs died



New York (WABC)-A pet food company is recalling dry foods that contain a potentially fatal ingredient that has been linked to the deaths of dozens of dogs.

The FDA is warning pet owners and veterinarians of certain Sportmix pet foods produced by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.

They may contain lethal levels of aflatoxin, a toxin produced by molds.

The recalled products have caused at least 28 dog deaths, and another 8 have caused illness.

Some of the symptoms reported include fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice and diarrhea. In some cases, pets may suffer liver damage, but no other symptoms.

Pet owners should stop recalling the recalled products to their pets and consult a veterinarian, especially if the pet shows any signs of illness.
