Facebook fixes a technical bug that affected political advertising a few days before the U.S. election

Facebook issued an update to political advertisers on Thursday, acknowledging that a technical error in its system caused a large number of ads for both parties to be inappropriately suspended.

The company said in a blog: “Although this affects a small part of our system̵

7;s advertisements on political and social issues, we regret any interruption in the delivery of these advertisements during this period.”

The error stems from a policy change announced by Facebook in early September, which aims to block any new political ads in the week before the US presidential election on November 3.

Facebook said a technical bug improperly suspended “a large number of ads” related to the policy decision. The company said that in addition, some “advertisers did not understand” the instructions provided by Facebook, which also caused its ads to be suspended.

The company stated that these issues affected “advertising from various political fields and presidential campaigns,” adding that no ads were suspended due to any partisan considerations. The company said it has made an update to enable the affected ads to run.

Earlier today, Rob Flaherty, the digital director of the Biden campaign, complained on Twitter that Facebook had not resolved issues related to campaign advertising five days before the election.

The election took place less than a week before the election. Many candidates rely on Facebook to target voters and donors through advertising.

According to CNBC’s analysis, political advertisers in the United States spent at least $264 million on Facebook in the third quarter, accounting for about 1.2% of revenue for the quarter.
