Who wants to get in?

Unlike 2017, the qualification race for the All-Star race will be held Saturday night before the All-Star Race itself instead of one day ago. The qualification race consists of three laps of 20 laps each and each stage winner will advance to the all-star race. The other driver advancing to the All-Star Race will be the non-winning driver who wins a fan vote this week.

Here are the riders trying to make the All-Star Race:

What is the new rule package?

The specifications of the All-Star Race Cars are unique compared to the point races in the 2018 season. After the NASCAR tried out another set of rules during the 2017 Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis, similar changes were made to the All-Star Race implemented to help drivers overtake each other more frequently.

The vehicles will slow throttle plates in the engines for maximum speed and acceleration. In addition to the engine settings, the cars will have aerochannels on the front to distribute the air around the sides of the car, and larger spoilers to further slow the cars and cut a larger hole through the air.

The combination of plates, channels and spoilers means that the cars will spin slower around the 1.5-mile lap and drivers are likely to be flat on the gas throughout the entire lap.

Will the race be different?

Hell yes. The combination of slower lap speeds and more air displacement will – NASCAR hopes – cause cars to use the train to relatively easily skip past each other while keeping the field in focus. It's not hard to imagine anything like a race in Daytona or Talladega, a mile taller than Charlotte.

Will this scenario run out? Who the hell knows. Charlotte gets pretty tight at the corners 2 and 4 exits. Can drivers stay side by side at the corner exit? Will they be able to grow big enough to easily make passes or will they get off while standing side by side?

At least, the All-Star Race this year has some intrigue to see if the tweaks work masterfully or are a big disaster. And given the fact that the changes are just a one-time thing for a race that does not matter, it will be fun to see a race that looks different from anything we'll see all season. The All-Star breed has not had this uniqueness for some time.
