According to a study published in the American College of Nutrition journal, potatoes may have been banned from low carbohydrate diets and nearly as vilified as bread. But they are not necessarily bad for the waist and could actually help us lose weight. Dieters who included potatoes in their meal plans were all losing weight – as long as they were reducing their total caloric intake. The researchers concluded that there is no evidence that potatoes lead to weight gain when cooked in a healthy way.
The researchers wanted to understand the role of lowering calories and glycemic index weight loss when potatoes are included in the diet. The glycemic index is a scale from 0 to 1
For the study, 90 obese men and women were divided into three groups. The first group was asked to reduce their calories, but to eat high glycemic foods. The second group was told to reduce their calories, but to eat foods with a low glycemic index. In the third group, people could eat whatever they wanted without being restricted to calories or glycemic foods.
All three groups got potatoes, healthy recipes and should eat five to seven servings of potatoes every week. At the end of the 12-week study, the researchers found that all three groups had decreased and there was no significant difference in weight loss between the three groups. Interestingly, even the control group reduced its calories and lost weight, even though it was not provided with a specific calorie restriction.
