Discovery in amber 100 million years ago reveals the sexual intercourse of adult female dragons

Since the Ordovician, small bivalve crustaceans theropods are the most abundant fossil arthropods, playing an important role in the reconstruction of paleoenvironment and evolutionary biology.

The vast majority of fossil beasts are represented by calcified shells, and their soft parts can provide valuable information about the ecology of ancient beasts, which is extremely rare.

Recently, Dr. Wang He and Professor Wang Bo from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and their collaborators have shown a well-preserved osteogenesis dragon with soft parts (appendages and reproductive organs) since the middle period. -Cretaceous Burmese amber (about 1

00 million years ago), reveals the sexual intercourse of adult animals.

The research was published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B On September 15

The Jackie Chan group in amber consists of 39 individuals, one piece of amber includes males, females and larvae.

X-ray computed tomography is used to obtain high-resolution three-dimensional images of its soft parts. The micro-CT reconstruction provided direct evidence of male clasper, sperm pump (Zenker organ), hemipenes, eggs, and female seminal vesicles containing giant sperm.

This is the first time that huge beast sperm have been found in beast fossils from the Cretaceous period. Its length is at least one-third the length of the ear canal animal. This discovery is also the earliest known animal sperm record, and is about 50 million years earlier than the oldest animal sperm fossil record.

Analysis of fossils and existing theropods shows that during sexual reproduction, males use their bimorphic fifth limbs (with hooked inner feet) to grasp females and introduce their semi-bipeds Females in the vagina in pairs. Then, the male pair of Zenker organs transfer the abnormally long but inactive sperm to the female through the male cysteine.

Zenker organs are easily identified as large, spiny, hardened parts of different sperm tubes in the existing ring snake Jackie Chan. The muscle fibers next to the organs connect numerous vertebrae, which are usually arranged in a series of threads with taxonomic features at the family level.

Once in the female, the sperm is pushed into two long sperm tubes, each of which terminates in a cyst-like seminal vesicle, which is used to store sperm. There, they eventually become sporty, arranging themselves into a more organized combination and fertilizing the eggs during ovulation.

Studies have shown that the types of Jackie Chan’s reproductive behaviors related to a large number of morphological adaptations have not changed for at least 100 million years. This is the most important example of evolutionary stagnation.

The emergence of complex reproductive mechanisms involving giant sperm has increased the success rate of mating, and may be an important contributor to the late Mesozoic explosive radiation of the superfamily Cypridoidea, which now includes most of the non-marine beasts.
