OnePlus entered the low-end market with its new Nord brand, followed closely by the new N10 5G. Unfortunately, this latest model does not match the original name. Although the US pricing is not yet official, there is no reason to buy in Europe, even if not all startup errors are available.
Design, hardware, items in the box
The build quality is solid, but still feels cheap. This phone is sturdy and durable, you can twist it with a wrench without any interference or bending, but even compared to the original Nord phone using similar materials, the smooth plastic back cover and frame don’t feel much.I can’t tell you exactly what the difference is, but it can feel different. N10 5G is also the company’s first mobile phone since OnePlus 6, which has a rear capacitive fingerprint sensor. Unlike the old version of Nord, OnePlus chose to include a headphone jack on the N10 5G, which feels good to the touch. It is also located at the bottom, which is my favorite place because it is the easiest to turn the phone upside down, which most readers can do.
I should point out: The Nord N10 5G is completely non-waterproof, which is different from the previous Nord, which the company called “splash-proof”, although the phone lack Dominant IP rating, like all OnePlus phones, until the recent OnePlus 8 Pro.
Perhaps the biggest change to the design, OnePlus removed the alert slider, which is a trademark feature of all OnePlus phones since OnePlus 2.The first time owner will not sigh for the loss, but in general, this is not a loss true A OnePlus phone. OP also offers N10 5G microSD expandable storage, which is the first storage for all OnePlus devices since OnePlus X in 2015, and the feature’s debut on mid-range phones is confusing. At least, this means that if you run out of 128GB of UFS 2.1 internal storage space, you will have enough media space.
This is also the first OnePlus phone with LCD display since OnePlus 2, and its size is 6.49 inches at 1080p and 90Hz. Although you won’t get those pitch-black OLED blacks, it is very good, and with its technology, you won’t encounter problems such as low-brightness irregularities or “green tones”, although you do feel greasy when you scroll. Compared with OLED. Color and brightness are generally good, although the weather during our test was not conducive to the best outdoor comparisons.
There is also a punch-hole camera cutout and a large chin on the screen, which is reminiscent of the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. The brightness around the camera drops slightly, but it is only really visible when the background is bright. In all practical use, this has never been a problem for me. The speaker (stereo through the earpiece) is the usual smartphone price. They are small, have no bass, and are a bit distorted at maximum volume, but they are loud.
I can’t speak of American packaging, but the EU model comes with a charger and cable. It is worth noting that there is no situation like the bundles that come with some OnePlus phones.
Software, performance and battery life
The Nord N10 5G comes with OxygenOS 10.5, which is an older version of the company’s Android-based software. It is one of my favorite appearances of Android. Although it has some problems with the content deep inside, it looks and feels pretty good. In short: if you are familiar with existing Android (or Android at all), then you will be at home. Although some changes have taken place around it, it is easier to adapt than Samsung’s OneUI.
But this is not to say that it lacks functionality. OnePlus’ built-in privileges allow you to copy applications that do not handle multiple accounts, such as WhatsApp. There is also a “horizontal quick reply” function, which makes full use of multi-tasking functions to facilitate quick messages when watching videos. Although, it only applies to some applications. OnePlus’ volume control menu is also better than stock. More negatively, OxygenOS also disrupted the expected behavior (at least by default) through overly aggressive background application management. In practice, this means that some apps may be late for notifications, and you may notice that apps that need to run in the background never run properly.
The overall performance was better or worse than my expectations. This is the first phone that I have the opportunity to use that supports Snapdragon 690. Although it can maintain 90Hz smoothness in most cases, random and sometimes unexpected things (such as UPS tracking websites) will bring it in Its knees. However, if you are willing to accept some stuttering, it usually feels good, and this also applies to games. Fortnite is hardly smooth under default settings and lost a lot of frames, but for me, getting #2 in an online game is enough, it’s enough for me.
A bigger problem I encountered was something that completely disrupted the transaction: randomly, when you wake up the phone, the touch screen will not work. It may fix itself in a few seconds, or it may take a few minutes, and it will only happen once in 20 to 40 times when you turn on the power, but this is very annoying and totally unacceptable behavior, almost OK Guarantee that you will encounter every day. After OnePlus first told us that this might be a hardware problem, we ran into problems on two separate phones (both from scratch/no backup), but it was not the case. Now, we are told that “OnePlus is aware of the problem with Android Police and is working hard to solve this problem.” Therefore, I hope that this problem will eventually be resolved.
Previously, we encountered a problem when connecting the phone to the Wi-Fi network reliably, but a recent update resolved the problem, and I also encountered some intermittent problems. The Bluetooth audio device was repeatedly disconnected immediately after connecting. When certain applications declare a wider color space when night mode is enabled, the color balance between them will also change very significantly, and its visibility in external applications is also less, and OnePlus does not provide other colors in the settings Calibration options. The fingerprint sensor may also take a long time to wake up the phone. Sometimes, the fingerprint sensor does not work at all until you wake up the phone with the power button.
Although the model we reviewed was imported from Europe, in the tests conducted in the United States, I had no problems with cellular connectivity, and it could be connected to T-Mobile’s 6th-generation 5G or lower network.
The last big issue that OnePlus has not resolved is the software update schedule: the phone was released with Android 10 and will only be updated to Android 11. Most importantly, you have only received two years of security patches. Considering that the original Nord will get better treatment, there are enough reasons to spend 50 euros more for this. If the price of the Nord N10 5G exceeds $300 when it is launched in the United States, OnePlus should be embarrassed.
At least the battery life is not bad. For the remaining 20%, I can turn on the screen for more than 7 hours in a day and a half, and I hope to break it for 8-9 hours in a day, although my phone is not as hard as some phones. People are. OnePlus’ 30W fast charging is still great and can quickly replenish the N10 5G when needed.
The photos taken by Nord N10 5G are pretty good. It has a main wide angle, an ultra wide angle, useless macro and a black and white camera. Mid-range cameras usually need to pay attention to the following: good lighting can take good photos, poor lighting will eventually cause turbidity. To be more specific, its crank exposure speed tends to be faster than ISO, so try to bypass it, and don’t crop if you can. I would not say that this is a “great” camera, but it is better than I expected.
It’s hard to get a photo sample these days, we updated it towards the end of our review to improve performance, and the weather didn’t change much.
The lack of OIS for the main camera is a bit problematic, especially in the best lighting conditions, the camera is suitable for long-term exposure, so please maintain a stable feel. Compared to other OnePlus phones, the color also seems insignificant to me: softer than the company’s usual “restrained” appearance. Darker details are also easily lost or processed into a paste. Nevertheless, the main shooter can still be repaired, as is the wide angle.
On the other hand, even under proper outdoor lighting conditions, macro cameras are terrible.I know that additional cheap cameras provide another effort-saving marketing method for these phones, but I really hope they spend their money on something better or give it a in fact Good macro camera mode, for example on OnePlus 8 Pro.
Left and center: Normal photos and monochrome editing afterwards. Correct: “Mono” color filter mode.
Like the OnePlus 8 color filter camera, the monochrome camera is accessible through the final “monochrome” filter mode, which seems to combine the results of the primary sensor and the monochrome secondary sensor. I didn’t expect it, but the result is indeed richer than the simple editing of similar photos (especially red) that are usually taken in monochrome, but the details also look a bit cloudy, so this is a compromise.
Should you buy it?
May not. OnePlus will not tell us what the price of this phone is in the United States. This is the final deciding factor in our review, but in the European Union, you can buy OG Nord for an extra 50 euros, and in every possible way. All are better. And this ignores the touch screen problem I encountered, which is unacceptable in mobile phones anyway.
We will retain the final review score before the US pricing and hope that the screen problem can be solved, but I don’t want to give a high score.
As I can see, people in the European Union have no reason to buy Nord N10 5G. And, unless its price in the United States has reached a truly incredible price, when it landed here, people would not have much reason to buy it here.
Purchase under the following conditions:
- You can’t spend an extra 50 euros on an original, better Nord phone and want a OnePlus phone in particular.
- You can compromise between performance and updates.
Do not purchase if the following situations occur:
- You need a reasonable update schedule, good hardware or a better camera.
- Non-OnePlus phones can be-a better choice.
